Arcanum wins all four quarters in WOAC victory over the Lady Blazers
ARCANUM – The No. 5 OHSAA state ranked DIII Arcanum Lady Trojans defeated the visiting National Trail Lady Blazers 46-33 in WOAC Thursday night basketball action.
“I feel very fortunate to get that one tonight,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore. “Hats off to Coach Byrd and National Trail. They came out and played a great ballgame, had a great plan and gave me some things to work on tomorrow.”
Arcanum took the opening period 12-9 led by Taylor Gray’s 4-points including 2-2 at the line, Madelyn Fearon and Hailey Unger each with a 3-pointer and a Kaitlyn Toy 2-point bucket.
Both teams struggled to get points on the second quarter board with the Lady Trojans adding 8-points while Trail was limited to 5-points sending the teams to the break with Arcanum holding a 20-14 advantage. Gray contributed 4-points, Unger drilled her second trey of the night and Fearon added a free throw.
The Lady Trailblazers stormed back to open third quarter play using a 7-0 run to take a 21-20 lead with 5:46 on the clock bringing a spirited Arcanum timeout.
“It took me to motivate them a little bit tonight,” Moore stated. “That is the first time this year I’ve had to do that but we have to learn from it – we can’t have lapses like that if we want to play the kind of basketball that we want to play at the end of the year. We have to take care of business and play our game.”
With the motivating timeout in the rear, the Lady Trojans would break the huddle and go on a 12-0 scoring run beginning with Ellie Fout stepping to the charity stripe to hit back-to-back free throws giving Arcanum a 22-21 lead and end with Ellie Fout’s 2-2 at the line for a double digit 32-21 lead at 1:50 on the third period clock.
The teams closed out third quarter play with Arcanum up 34-26 and the game headed to the final quarter of play. Gray paced Arcanum with 7-points, Ellie Fout 4-points all coming at the charity stripe (4-4) and Meghan McCans canning a 3-pointer to round out third period scoring.
National Trail refused to go away getting Arcanum’s lead down to 4-points, 34-30 at the 4:42 mark before the Lady Trojans closed out the game with on a 12-3 run to earn a 13-point conference victory.
Unger led the Lady Trojans with five fourth quarter points, Gray added 4-points and McCans hit her second triple of the night.
For the game, Taylor Gray led Arcanum and all scorers on the night with a game high 19-points including 5-5 at the charity stripe.
“Taylor has been playing a great ballgame all year,” noted Moore. “Tonight her role stepped up a little bit more. They were on the 3-point line not giving our guards what we typically get so she had to fill in and take that scoring role tonight. She was able to do it and get to the line in the second half and knock down some free throws…and that was a huge story in the second half.”
With the win Arcanum ups its season record to 11-1 while the Lady Blazers close out the night with an 8-4 mark.
“It builds some excitement but at the same time it has to motivate us to be better and to play like a No. 5 team in the state,” Coach Moore said of the Lady Trojans No. 5 OSHAA state ranking. “It has to motivate us – we have to be able to play like we’re the No. 5 team in the state and do the things we know how to do. It has to make us better and not complacent.”
“Our focus is to take one game at a time and prepare us for the tournament at the end of the year,” Coach Moore concluded.
