Arcanum JV downs Lady Patriots

Strong Arcanum Lady Trojans junior varsity squad defeats Tri-Village

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans junior varsity basketball team defeated the visiting Tri-Village Lady Patriots JV squad 49-5 in Thursday night WOAC play.

With an Arcanum varsity squad starting lineup of five seniors, the Lady Trojans will be looking to the JV program for the next level of play starting with the 2022-23 season.

“Our JV team is very strong this year,” said Arcanum JV coach, Stevie Johnting. “I have a lot of good freshmen and sophomores that are ready for the next level so making sure they are playing to their full potential and they are working hard.”

“We always say ‘be us’,” Johnting continued. “Be us and play our kind of basketball no matter who the opponent is. They did that tonight and I am proud of them. All five of my starters sit at varsity. Coach and I are getting them ready for next year already.”

Arcanum jumped out to a 22-2 lead after one period of play led by Ashlyn Miller’s 6-points including a trey, Brooke Anderson with 4-points, a Rylee Leeper 3-pointer, Alexis Gibbons 3-4 at the line and Lily Johnting, Haley Smith and MacKenzie Byrne each with a 2-point basket.

Arcanum took the second quarter 12-3 with Miller adding 7-points to the board including her second triple of the first half, Gibbons with 4-points and Johnting with a free throw sending the teams to the break with the Lady Trojans leading 34-5.

Arcanum outscored Tri-Village 15-0 in second half action with a running clock in play giving the Lady Trojans a 44-point margin victory.

Ashlyn Miller led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 13-points.

“Everybody here contributed tonight,” Coach Johnting stated. “Ashlyn Miller really stepped up. Ashlyn dropping 13 for us tonight – that was huge. She was on the floor hustling.”

“Our other two guards, Brooke (Anderson) and Lily (Johnting) always show up pressuring the ball. Defense is our thing, so if we get on the defensive end offense will come to us.”

“Our bigs…I have a lot of post players getting on the floor,” Johnting added. “I’m proud of them for boxing out and holding their ground in the paint like they always do. Alexis Gibbons plays guard and post, big-big freshman for us and I am excited to coach her – she is one that is definitely ready for the next level.”
