The Arcanum Lady Trojans junior varsity earns non-conference road win over Eaton
EATON – The Arcanum Lady Trojans JV squad defeated the Eaton Lady Eagles 43-27 in non-conference action.
“Great win,” said Arcanum JV coach, Stevie Johnting. “We’ve struggled to get JV games on our schedule this year so to come in here on a visiting team’s floor and show up and get a win – we executed our plays very well.”
Arcanum took a 10-7 lead after one period of play with Alexis Gibbons good for 5-points including a 3-pointer and 2-2 at the free throw line, Ashlyn Miller canned a trey and Haley Smith added a basket.
Period No. 2 saw the Lady Trojans’ aggressive defensive play outdistance the home team 15-6 sending the teams to the break with Arcanum leading by a double digit 25-13 lead. Lilly Johnting and Gibbons each scored 4-points, Rylee Leeper drilled a 3-pointer and Mackenzie Byrne and Smith each contributed 2-points.
“I am very proud of the girls for their hustle,” Johnting stated. “We had 17 steals tonight – that’s incredible. We have really gotten better defensively so being able to execute it…and subs coming in and being able to execute it – it’s great.”
The teams played to a 9-9 third period score with Miller good for 3-points and Gibbons, Smith and Byrne each adding a basket for a 34-22 Arcanum advantage with one period to play.
“We’re really getting better,” noted Coach Johnting. “We’re pushing hard in practice to become a better team because we don’t have a lot of games. We don’t play again until next week.”
Arcanum won the final quarter 9-5 to earn a 16-point victory on the Lady Eagles home court.
“Lexi Gibbons finding her outside shot tonight, that was huge, huge for her, she’s a leader on the floor,” Johnting said. “My point guard Lilly and Brooke Anderson both show up and handle the pressure. Ashland Miller stepped up in there towards the end. My bigs were aggressive in the paint. I love running plays for them and watching them work on those moves we have been working on in practice.”
Gibbons led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 16-points.
“Very proud of all 11 of them showing up tonight,” Coach Johnting concluded.
