Madelyn Fearon sets all-time Lady Trojans career assist record in Arcanum tournament win over Northeastern

COVINGTON – The Arcanum Lady Trojans earned a first round 57-21 OHSAA DIII tournament win over the Northeastern Lady Jets in a game that saw Arcanum’s Madelyn Fearon become the Lady Trojans all-time career assist record holder.

“Focus was a big part of our game plan – being ready from the tip,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore.    “We came out and had a great first quarter.”

Arcanum took the floor as the No. 1 seed taking one the No. 19 seed Lady Jets without the services of senior post player, Taylor Gray due to a prior injury.

The Lady Trojans jumped out to a 24-5 lead after one quarter of play led by Hailey Unger’s 10-points including two 3-pointers, 7-points from Madelyn Fearon including at trey and 6 Meghan McCans points including a triple and an Ellie Fout free throw.

Arcanum extended its lead taking the second quarter 17-5 sending the teams to the break with the Lady Trojans holding a commanding 41-10 halftime advantage.

Unger scored 6 Arcanum points, Fearon 5-points including a 3-pointer and 2-2 at the line, and McCans, Kylee Freeman and Emilie Fout each added a basket.

Period No. 3 went to the Lady Trojans 13-7 with Emilie Fout drilling a trey and McCans, Fearon, Unger, Kaitlyn Toy and Freeman each accounting for 2-points sending the game to the final period with Arcanum up 54-17 with the game being played with a running clock.

“We didn’t make every shot tonight and I want to see us value every possession and try to score every possession,” said Moore. “We’re going to make that adjustment moving forward.”

The Lady Trojans backed its offense down in the fourth scoring just 3-points while Northeastern was adding 4-points to the board for a 36-point Arcanum tournament win.

“We have to be playing our basketball,” Coach Moore stated. “We have to play our game and if we can do that and have an opportunity at the end of the game to get some younger girls some tournament experience that’s going to go a long way moving forward for the program – but we have to take care of business first.”

Unger led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 18-points, 16 coming in the first half as the Lady Trojans all-time career scoring leader would not see much of the court in second half play.
