ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans defeated the visiting Ansonia Lady Tiger 3-1 in Tuesday night WOAC volleyball action.
“Ansonia did awesome tonight,” said Arcanum coach, Macy O’Dell. “They worked their tails off tonight and they work very hard. Coach Buckingham should be proud of them.”
“We’re not young but we’re young when it comes to time to overcoming adversity,” said Ansonia coach Darcy Buckingham. “We’ll get there.”
Arcanum jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind the serving of Ellie Fount in set No. 1 on their way to an easy 25-10 win to lead 1-0 on the night.
“Ellie has a great serve,” said O’Dell.
Set No 2 saw the score tied at 5-5, 6-6 and 9-9 before the Lady Trojans used a 7-0 run with Fout once again at the serving line to lead 16-9. With Taylor Gray serving, Arcanum used a 5-0 run to lead 22-13 on their way to a 25-17 win and lead 2-0.
“I have told the girls from the beginning if they can come out and play with consistency it would be a team to be reckoned with but it takes us one or two sets to get woke up and get moving,” Coach Buckingham stated. “Until they can find that consistency to start at the beginning then we’re going to have to fight back all the time.”
The Lady Tigers battle back to lead 8-2 in set No. 3 and move ahead 13-5 before Arcanum would close to one trailing 22-21 only to have the visitor earn a 25-22 victory and send the match to set No. 4.
“We just talked about consistency in the locker room,” O’Dell stated following the match. “We can get up – we can get down. We have to work on being consistent all the way across the game.”
Ansonia bolted out to an 8-0 fourth set advantage and held a 12-4 lead before the Lady Trojans found its stride to make a 21-11 scoring run to win the fourth set 25-23 fourth to earn the Western Ohio Athletic Conference victory.
“For us to come back that third set and almost beat the in the third and then to come back in that fourth set – extremely proud of them for coming back and working hard but like I told them, you wouldn’t have to work so hard if you didn’t get down so much,” O’Dell stated, “so we have to work on consistency – that’s our biggest thing. We have the defense, we have offense.”
“The season is still young and we’re still working through,” said Coach Buckingham. “We have a couple injuries that we are working through. We had an injury tonight and I thought we adjusted well to the injury when we lost our second setter, so our other girls came in and stepped up. We’re not young (8-senirs) but we’re young when it comes to overcoming adversity – we’ll get there.”
With the win, Arcanum improves to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while Ansonia falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 win the WOAC.
