ARCANUM—The Arcanum VFW Post #4161 hosted the second annual Village of Arcanum Purple Heart Ceremony on Saturday morning.
Mayor of Arcanum Bonnie Millard gave opening remarks to the large crowd in attendance at the start of the event.
“It gets me that we’ve got this big of a turn out for the ceremony,” she said. “I really appreciate it. It’s a beautiful day for our second celebration.”
The event allows Arcanum to honor all Purple Heart recipients, as well as remember and give thanks to all of the men and women that were wounded or gave the ultimate sacrifice in combat while in the United States military. At their first ceremony last year, Arcanum honored 13 veterans.
The guest speaker Kevin Mallonee, Arcanum VFW Post Commander, and Combat Infantry Veteran of two tours in Iraq, said he’s lucky he didn’t receive a Purple Heart.
“They were not as lucky as I, or many others,” he said. “They gave a part of their body and soul to this country. We salute you with everything we have.”
The 2022 Arcanum Purple Heart Recipients are: Gale Baker (WWII), Donald Byrum (Army, Vietnam), Douglas LeFever (Air Force, Vietnam), Michael Willman (Army, WWII), Charles Lesher (WWII), Ohmer Strawser (WWII), Daniel Warvel (Army, WWI) and Mike Sanders (Army).
The Scout Troop #185 attended the ceremony and did the Posting of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as the Arcanum High School Band performed the National Anthem and Taps. Bruce Shank gave performances of God Bless the USA and Some Gave All.
Mayor Millard included a special thanks to Kevin Mallonee, April Smith, the Arcanum VFW Post #4161, The Rose Post, Arcanum High School Band, Arcanum Village employees, Larry Harter, Bruce Shank, Scout Troop #185, friends and family of Purple Heart recipients for support and memorabilia and all those who participated in the golf cart parade prior to the ceremony.
