Arcanum Girls 2021-22 Basketball Preview

ARCANUM – The Arcanum varsity girls basketball team is coming off a very successful season last year going 20-5 winning a sectional title.  They return several key players and have high expectations of competing for a conference title and a long tournament run.

Abbey Moore will be back for her 2nd year coaching the Trojans and was selected as the Southwest District DIII coach of the year last season.  She along with her assistant coaches have been working hard in preparing the team for bigger things.

“We will compete this year with a full Varsity and JV roster of 21. Former graduate Stevie Johnting is back to coach our JV team this season. Also assisting this season will be Brandy Buck, Kip Gray, and Abbey O’Donnell. I am very thankful for my staff and all the time and effort they put in to making this program better,” Moore said.

The Trojans will rely on the experience of 5 seniors; 3 who have played varsity basketball for the last 4 years. Those seniors are Hailey Unger, Madelyn Fearon, Taylor Gray, Meghan McCans and Ellie Fout.

Returning is the Southwest District Player of the Year in DIII Hailey Unger at one guard spot.  She averaged 19.4 PPG, 4 RPG, 3.5 AST and 3.2 STL.  She recently signed to play basketball in College for University of South Carolina Aiken.

Junior center Hannah Rademachir and guard Shelby Haye both played JV last year and will be playing varsity full time this year.

Rounding out the roster is sophomore guard Emilie Fout who averaged 1.9 PPG and  2.2 REB.

Coach Moore plans to challenge her team to focus and bring energy and intensity every night.

“For us to have success this season we must play to our potential every time we take the floor. Our goal is to compete to the best of our ability in every game we play to enable us to be in a position at the end of the year to make a long tournament run.”

Moore also believe the conference will be very competitive and welcomes the challenge.

“I believe our conference is going to be highly competitive. We must respect every opponent we face and prepare for everyone’s best. We have many coaches that are doing such a great job building their programs. It is great to see the progress that everyone is making. We are looking forward for the opportunity to compete in the inaugural WOAC season,” Moore concluded.

The Trojans are off to a good start this year with wins over two tough non-league opponents a 58-36 victory over Bishop Fenwick and 45-28 over Waynesville.  They also defeated Ansonia 66-22 in the first conference game.

In those 3 games Madelyn Fearon is averaging 19 points and 4 assist. Hailey Unger is also averaging 19 points and 5 steals and Taylor Gray 10.5 points and 8 rebounds.  The Trojans will have a key game on Thursday verses Preble Shawnee.
