Arcanum Lady Trojans outscore Preble Shawnee 24-8 in final period for big WOAC home win
ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans and the Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows battled to a 26-23 Arcanum halftime lead in Thursday night WOAK play.
“It was a big one,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore of the Thursday night win. “We knew coming in this year Preble Shawnee was going to be up there in the conference and to be fortunate and get a win here – we are thankful for that.”
Preble Shawnee came into the night with five Lady Arrows averaging 8-points or more per game going head-to-head against an Arcanum lineup of five seniors.
“Our conference is going to be competitive and everybody is going to be out for us – we have a target on our back so we have to come out every game,” Coach Moore stated. “Teams are improving and we can’t take any game lightly. If we want to be where we want to be at the end of the year, we have to play our game every game.”
The Lady Trojans grabbed an early 19-16 lead after one period of play led by Katlyn Toy’s 7-points off the bench including a 3-pointer, 5-points each from Madelyn Fearon and Hailey Unger including a triple by each and 2-2 at the free throw line from Taylor Gray.
“Katlyn (Toy) is capable of scoring,” said Moore. “She is kind of like our secret weapon coming in – just takes us to a new quickness. Being able to add a scorer coming in off the bench is huge and she come up big tonight.”
Period No. 2 had the teams playing to a 7-7 standoff sending the MVL matchup to the break with Arcanum holding a slim 3-point advantage over the visiting Lady Arrows.
“We gave up a lot of buckets in the paint and that is something we have to adjust as we move forward,” Moore said. “We’re going to fix that.”
Arcanum opened a little space on the board in the third outscoring the Shawnee 17-12 with Fearon pacing the Lady Trojans with 7-points sending the game to the final period with Arcanum leading 43-35.
The Lady Trojans used the final period to blow the game wide open by outscoring Preble Shawnee 24-8 for a final 23-point margin of victory and stay perfect on the young season with a 4-0 record.
Arcanum got balanced fourth quarter scoring: Unger 6-points, Gray 5-points, Toy and Alexis Gibbons 4-points each, Fearon and Haley Smith 2-points each and Ellie Fout 1-point.
“Balance soring is definitely a key and getting some easy ones in transition.” Moore said, “Geat job distributing the ball and playing team basketball on the offensive end.”
Unger led Arcanum and all scorers with a game high 19-points. Also hitting double figures for the Lady Trojans; Fearon with 14-points and Gray and Toy each with 13-points.
