Arcanum earns senior night win

Arcanum honors five seniors in final home game of the 2021-2022 basketball season

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Trojans defeated the visiting Ansonia Tigers 49-32 in WOAC basketball action on Senior Night in Arcanum.

“It’s great to be able to put the seniors out with a win at home,” said assistant varsity coach, Matt Grote.   “Ansonia had a great game plan against us. They played hard but our guys toughed it out, they put it together and got the job done.”

The Trojans took an early 1-point 10-9 lead after one quarter of play with Arcanum getting five players in the scoring column and Ansonia four Tigers putting points on the board.

Arcanum pushed it lead to 25-18 after two periods of play taking the second quarter behind six Jake Goubeaux points including his second 3-pointer of the nigh. Ansonia sophomore Garrett Stammen scored eight of the Tigers nine second quarter points.

The Darke County teams played to an 8-8 third quarter standoff with Bryson Shart leading the Trojans with 5-points including a trey while Stammen was pacing Ansonia with 5-points including a triple sending the teams to the final period with Arcanum up 33-26.

The Trojans were 10-points better in the fourth taking the quarter 16-6 to earn a 17-point conference victory.

Playing their final home game for the Arcanum Trojans: No. 0 Jake Goubeaux, No. 23 Chad Pitzer, No. 24 Ian Baker, No. 30 Isaiah Gilmore and No. 42 Chase Werling. Ansonia returns the entire roster for the 2022-2023 season.

“They are all great kids,” Coach Grote said of the five Arcanum seniors. “They are all great to be around, they all work hard at practice.”

“Jake is a four year starter, he is just a great kid, comes from a great family. He’s a hard worker and he is fun to watch.”

“Ian Baker has been a great leader for us. He’s starting to get back into it – he’s been out for most of the year but he is coming on, he’s starting to put it together and it is just great what “Bake” does.”

“Chad Pitzer is another great leader. He does a lot of little things for us that people might not notice but he does those things to keep us together and he is really positive overall.”

“Isaiah Gilmore plays hard and he jumps really well. He came in not quite knowing what his role was but he has excelled in it and the more he’s played the better he’s played and the more minutes he’s gotten and we’re real proud of him.”

“Chase Werling is great in practice, he’s a great worker and he’s a good leader. Another great kid to be around. He is kind of hard to guard inside and it makes us dangerous,” Grote concluded.

Stammen led Ansonia and all scorers with a game high 15-points. Goubeaux paced Arcanum with 13- points.
