The Lady Trojans defense shines while offense puts up 72 points in WOAC win over Dixie
NEW LEBANON – The 5-0 Arcanum Lady Trojans traveled to New Lebanon to take on the 5-0 Dixie Lady Greyhounds in a Thursday night matchup between the two undefeated WOAC teams and came away with a convincing 72-29 win.
“It’s about being ready to go every game,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore following the win. “This season we are taking it one game at a time no matter who our opponent is. We have to respect everybody and they are doing great things here at Dixie so we have to be focused and ready to go.”
Arcanum jumped out to a 12-2 double digit lead at 4:10 in the first quarter and never looked back taking a 17-9 lead after one period of play led by Hailey Unger’s 8-points including two 3-pointers, Meghan McCans with 6-points including a trey, Madelyn Fearon 2-points and a Katlyn Toy free throw.
Arcanum stretched its lead to 31-9 in the opening three minutes of period No. 2 and would take a 35-14 lead at the break.
Unger and Taylor Gray paced the Lady Trojans with 6-points each in the second, McCans and Emilee Fout 2-points apiece, and Fearon and Kylee Freeman each added a point.
The Lady Trojans’ expanding lead carried over to the second half adding 24-points to the third quarter board outscoring Dixie 24-11 with six Lady Trojans getting in the scoring column including McCan’s two treys for 6-points, Unger 6-points, Freeman 4-points and Ellie Fout, Toy, Gray and Alexis Gibbons each with 2-point baskets.
Arcanum Coach Abbey Moore went deep into her bench with several JV players seeing action taking the final period 13-4 earning a 43-point Western Ohio Athletic Conference road win.
“It’s always a good thing to be building the program giving those girls an opportunity to get in and get some varsity minutes,” Coach Moore noted. “Hopefully we can keep putting ourselves in those positions to keep doing that this year but it takes everybody – it’s a full team effort.”
Through six games Arcanum is scoring at a 61.8 clip while holding its opponents to 33.7 points per contest.
“Everybody did a great job,” Coach Moore stated. “Defensively Hailey gets her hands on a lot of basketballs – everybody, all five of them.”
“When we decide to play defense our team defense can be pretty unstoppable sometimes but we have to keep pushing it because if we want to get to the level we want be, we have to push it every day,” added Moore. “I am proud of these girls and just want to keep it going.”
With the win Arcanum goes to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. Dixie drops to 5-1 with its first loss of the season and 1-1 in the WOAC.
