Arcanum Lady Trojans fall to Preble Shawnee in OHSAA DIII tournament play
COVINGTON – The Arcanum Lady Trojans season came to a close dropping a 70-62 OHSAA DIII tournament game to the Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows.
“We fought, it wasn’t like we just laid down,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore following the game. “Just too big of a hole to start and that foul trouble was hard to get out of but proud of the fight that we had – just unfortunate that we couldn’t get over the hump.”
Arcanum took an early 3-0 lead on a Hailey Unger 3-pointer before the Lady Arrow used an 18-8 scoring run to lead 18-11 after one quarter of play.
Preble Shawnee continued to have the hot hand in second quarter action taking the period 23-16 sending the game to the break with the Lady Arrows holding a double digit 41-27 advantage.
The Lady Trojans battled back to get the Preble Shawnee lead down to 6-points; 46-40 at 3:53 in the third quarter only to have the Lady Arrows make it a 10-point game going to the final period of play leading 52-42.
“It took too much energy to come back and unfortunately when we had some of those looks, those didn’t fall because we gave a lot of energy to get there,” Moore stated.
Period No. 4 had Preble Shawnee score 6 unanswered points to open fourth quarter play and go up 58-42 with 5:42 on the fourth quarter board before the Lady Trojans would close out the game on a 20-12 scoring run only to come up short and fall out of tournament play.
“Hailey (Unger) was able to knock down some big shots yet again she was in foul trouble so that took away our intensity on defense,” Moore noted. “When I have all five of them in foul trouble it changes what we have to do defensively and unfortunately Preble Shawnee took advantage of that.”
Arcanum won the second half 35-29 but the first half went to the Lady Arrows 41-27. For the game Preble Shawnee was 27-35 at the free throw line, Arcanum 11-17.
“Putting them on the free throw line – our defense let us down tonight and that is kind of the story of the game,” said Moore. “Hats off to them, they did a great job being aggressive and attacking and getting to that free throw line – unfortunately we fell on the wrong end.”
Five Lady Trojans seniors played their final home game for Arcanum: No. 11 Meghan McCans, No. 12 Ellie Fout, No. 13 Madelyn Fearon, No. 14 Hailey Unger and No. 34 Taylor Gray.
“They have left their mark – they’re good kids,” Coach Moore said of her five seniors. “I am extremely proud of the way they handled themselves. Anytime things got rough on the floor, got nasty or got dirty, they kept their cool and held themselves to a high standard. That is something you want in your program and want to build on and want these little eyes seeing. Just extremely proud of all of them.”
“I told them in the locker room life is going to hit you hard and there is going to be things that come up in life that are a lot more worse than losing this ballgame, but how you handle yourself now and how you handle your emotions and how you rebound from this is going to make you be able to handle these situations in life,” added Moore.
Campbell Jewell led Preble Shawnee and all scorers with a game high 32-points including 17-19 at the free throw line for 89.4 percent and three 3-pointers. Hailey Unger pace Arcanum with 28-points including seven 3-pointers and a perfect 2-2 at the charity stripe.
