Arcanum Boys Golf Team Wins League & Sectional Title!

ARCANUM – The Arcanum Boys Golf Team had a spectacular finish at the end of the regular season in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference and post season tournament to garner a share of the first ever WOAC Boys Golf Title.  They would use that momentum to go on and win an OHSAA Golf sectional title at Turtle Creek to advance to the districts.

The Trojans lost to Newton by two strokes back on August 30th for their only loss on the year which also happened to be a league loss.  They still had a big match yet with Tri-Village who at the time was undefeated and with a win there and a strong post season tournament they still had an outside shot at a WOAC title.

Arcanum overcame the first hurdle on September 16 by knocking off the Patriots 164-181.

Then in the WOAC post season tournament they shot a season low 321

“We knew Newton and Tri-Village were going to be tough matches and had them circled at the beginning of the year,” Arcanum boys golf coach Jordan Greve said.

Since there were a few new teams in the conference Preble Shawnee and Dixie, Trojan’s coach Greve wasn’t sure what to expect out of them.

“With Shawnee and Dixie, we just didn’t know much about them, so it took a couple of weeks of scores to evaluate the rest of the field, but we knew Tri-Village and Newton would be tough,” Greve stated.

“I challenged our guys at the beginning of the season to really focus and play up to their abilities.  We started strong and our performance in the invitationals really surprised me,” Greve added.

“We have a freshman playing the two and I knew he was good; I just didn’t know how good.  He’s proven himself throughout the season … but until we got into the invitationals we had some scores significantly better than last season so I knew we had a good team going if we could just keep that standard high.

Arcanum had Newton coming to play at their home course Beechwood back on August 30th and felt like they had a home course advantage.

“We were up by 7 strokes after the 1’s and 2’s came in and I was hoping it would hold up, but Newton is so solid 1-6, very consistent and all score well, so I knew it would be tight and they ended up getting us by two strokes.

Since that match the rest of the team 3-6 has stepped up their game.

“Aidan Psczulkoski is a great example scoring a personal best 86 in the WOAC Tournament, it was a great round for us, and we really needed it to help us shoot a team total of 321 to edge out Newton by 1 stroke,” Greve praised.

The 321 was a season low for Arcanum and the 322 a low for Newton as well as both schools put up great numbers on a waterlogged course in cool, damp and windy conditions.

“I told Newton coach Ryan Karn that it was pretty fitting how it all ended up … we were head-to-head all the way through and the difference between our two schools for the season was just 3 strokes,”

“They beat us by two in the regular season and we beat them by one in post season tournament, so it’s fitting that we would both become co-champs,” Greve stated.

Arcanum used that momentum of the WOAC post season tournament and experience at the OHSAA DIII boys golf sectional tournament at Turtle Creek and they would once again find themselves going up against WOAC Co-Champ Newton with the Trojans again winning by 1 stroke over the Indians to claim a sectional title.

The top 4 teams advance to the district as National Trail was 3rd and Covington 4th and they will also go to the district golf tournament to be held at Beavercreek Golf Course on Thursday October 7, 9:00am.

Freshman Graham Brubaker of Arcanum was the medalist with a 76. The top 4 individuals not on a team that advance also qualify for districts.  WOAC golfers Brayden Cable of Franklin Monroe shot an 86, Bradford Scout Spencer an 88 and Tri-County Hunter DeGrasse an 88 also advance to the district golf tournament.
