Ansonia XC Shows Well at Blackhawk Invitational

Ansonia Tigers compete at Chenoweth Trails in Blackhawk Cross Country Invitational

GREENVILLE – The Ansonia cross country runners were back on the course this past Saturday at the Blackhawk Invitational. This race featured many schools from around the county and beyond, pitting racers against a formidable course at Chenoweth Trails. The high school girls took the course first. Olivia Creager crossed the tape with a seventh place overall finish in a time of 24:27. Emily Kelly came in with a 17th place finish overall in a time of 27:42.

“I was very proud of our high school girls today,” said Ansonia coach, Jason Wright. “This is a tough course, no doubt about it. Our ladies continue to work so hard in practice and I think the results are showing up on race day. Olivia has done a great job making the jump from the junior high to the high school course layout.”

In the high school boys race, Matthew Lee finished 1st place overall with a time of 17:59. Ethan Sparks [7th place, 19:39], Matt Barga [20:25], Luken Longenecker [22:18], and Ian Brown [22:32] finished out the scoring 5 for Ansonia, while Gavin Stacher [24:39] and Brayden Barnes [25:34] solidified the 3rd place finish for the Tiger team.

“Matt Lee is a huge spark for our team. He does a great job pulling our guys to keep pushing for greater results. His hard work is certainly paying off, and the rest of our guys are following his lead every week.”

“It was a great day to get out on the course against some excellent competition from the area,” Coach Wright stated. “Greenville brings a great squad with a lot of experience, and Arcanum is always vying for the top spot in our conference. Any time you get a chance to compete against that level of athleticism and see how you stack up against the best is a great race.”

The junior high girls were out next, with London Reichert bringing home a 1st place finish overall in 14:03. Elise Hahn [12th place] and Charlotte Barga [13th place] finished in a time of 16:19, and Mackenzie Billenstein crossed in a time of 19:15.

The junior high boys capped off the day’s races with strong finishes from Brady Wright and Kevin Johnson. Brady led the Tiger team with a time of 16:07 and Kevin had a hard fought 20:19.

“This was a great day for our junior high runners. You won’t find a more challenging course than this,” said Wright. “Our kids love the challenge this course presents, and I think they stepped up and had some great finishes today. London continues to set the pace for our junior high teams and has worked hard to put herself into a position to be at the head of the pack.”

Ansonia will be back in action this coming Saturday at the Troy Twilight Invitational, a unique event where the races are run at night under the lights. All races start at 6:30 pm next Saturday on the levee near the Hobart Arena in Troy and will run throughout the evening. Make plans to come out and support your Ansonia XC runners!
