Ansonia Local Schools name football facility "Coach Eugene Hoening Field" in honor of legendary coach
ANSONIA – Ansonia Local Schools honored its legendary football coach of 38 years, Coach Eugene Hoening prior to the Tigers Friday night home win over the visiting Arcanum Trojans with the naming of the school’s football facility; Coach Eugene Hoening Field.
“I like to think I had a lot of great coaches through the years,” Hoening said. “Good coaches, guys who treated kids right.”
“Ansonia boys always work hard at whatever you ask them to do,” added Hoening. “They’ll go as hard as they can for as long as they can. They just have a tremendous work ethic.”
Coach Hoening returned this season as an assistant coach under first year Ansonia head football coach Adam Hall, an Ansonia alumni player under Coach Hoening.
“There is no one who deserves it more than Coach Hoening, there’s no one who has given more to Ansonia in general than Coach Hoening,” said Coach Hall. “Coach Hoening is a great football coach, we benefit from having him on our team, our guys love having him on the team, he’s great for us, he’s great for me, and as good as a football coach as he is, he’s a better person and that’s the thing about coach – he deserves every bit of credit he gets.”
Coach Hoening took time for a few quips from his 38 years at the helm of the Tigers successful football program.
“Football is a challenge, it’s a grind. Often times it’s not fun but guys like the challenge.”
“Football is not a democracy. If you’re the head coach you may not be always right but if that is what you believe, that’s what you do.”
“There are challenges but you just deal with it and go on. Every week is a new game, you prepare for the next game.”
