Ansonia Falls to Tall Lehman Team

Young Ansonia team struggles with Sidney Lehman's size

ANSONIA – A fact in the life in coaching basketball is that you can’t teach size was evident as the Sidney Lehman Catholic Cavaliers fielded a team that included 6’7”, 6’4”, 6’3” and 6’2” players. Ansonia’s tallest player comes in at 6’2”, sophomore Ethan Reichert followed by 6’1” sophomore Garrett Stammen, 6’0” sophomore Trevor Hemmerich and 6’0” junior Ian Schmitmeyer but Ansonia coach, Devin Limburg was not making excuses following the Tigers 63-30 loss.

“They are one of the better teams we will see this year but it is never fun to get beat by 30,” said Limburg, “but it is good for our guys to see that is going to be the type of competition we’ll see when we play in the tournament. If we play a Loramie, a Botkins, any team like that – they have big guys so we have to figure how to defend it.”

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 20-8 lead after one period of play and stretched its lead to 37-13 at the halftime break.

“I though our effort wasn’t good in the first half,” Limburg stated. “We were kind of timid and waited for them to come to us instead of attacking them especially in our zone. We waited for it to happen and in a zone you can’t do that or it’s too late.”

Ansonia battled back to take period No. 3 by a 14-10 score led by Schmitmeyer’s 7-points including a 3-pointer, Stammen 4-points including a trey and a Kadyn Edwards triple sending the game to the fourth with the visitors leading 47-27.

“The third quarter I told them I don’t care what happens the rest of the game – go hard here, let’s show something,” said Coach Limburg. “I thought we had a really good third quarter and that is something we can take out of it.”

The final period went to Lehman 16-3 to close out the Tuesday night non-conference contest.
