Greenville high school boys soccer team gains experience from GHS alumni

GREENVILLE – Greenville men’s alumni defeated the 2022 Green Wave high school boys soccer team in the school’s alumni soccer match.

“Those guys have been here,” said Greenville boys soccer coach, Marshall Combs. “There is a lot of tradition on the field, that is evident and they remember what it was like to be a freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors so those memories come back for them. Everybody has fun and it just brings back a lot of memories, a lot of tradition and it is really good friendly competition.”

“A lot of the guys used to play here, now have families, kids and wives,” Combs added. “They get to see now where their dads and brothers, whoever else got to play during their high school years.”

The teams played three 20 minute periods with a short break between each 20 minutes of play before a good crowd at Harmon Field.

“It’s exciting because they’ve heard of these guys or they were in middle school or elementary when these guys were in high school,” Coach Combs noted. “For a lot of them they never got the opportunity when they were younger so it is exciting to play a live game with these older alumni guys because they have never had the opportunity to when they were in school so it’s a lot of fun.”

GHS graduate and current Greenville school board member, Brad Gettinger, a regular on the alumni team traded in his uniform for a whistle to officiate the highly competitive match.

Coach Ernst called and asked if I would be interested in helping officiate and it was a great excuse for me to be out here and not play,” Gettinger said with a chuckle. “I love being out here with all the old guys.”

“It is always a great opportunity to support these guys and that is definitely the spirit of the game out here,” continued Gettinger. “You see the alumni taking the high school kids and those coachable moments – hey, maybe look for this and you see a lot of that out here. It is definitely a spirit of helping these guys get better.”
